Flashcards · Listen mode

Review the cards with your eyes free.

For the commute, the dishes or a walk. Each card is read aloud, then a pause for you to say the answer, then the answer. Saying it before you hear it is what turns listening into practice.

Keep this page open: most phones stop speaking when the screen locks. Listening does not move cards on the flashcard schedule; review them on the flashcards page to do that.

How to use listen mode

Listen mode reads the NCE flashcards aloud with your browser's built-in speech, so you can review while your hands and eyes are busy. Each card plays in three steps: the front is read, a pause gives you time to answer, and then the back is read so you can check yourself. Without signing in you can listen to a sample of 20 cards. Sign in with Google to listen to the full deck of 1,100+ cards across the six NCE domains.

Set it up once

  • Domain. Pick the domain your study plan has you on this week, or all domains for mixed review.
  • Order. "Due cards first" starts with the cards your flashcard schedule says are due. "Shuffled" mixes everything.
  • Pause to answer. Start with 8 seconds. Drop to 5 or 3 as the answers come faster.
  • Speed and voice. Slow the speech down for long definitions, and pick the clearest voice your device offers.

Answer out loud, every time

The pause is the whole exercise. Say the answer before you hear it, even in a few words. Listening without answering feels like studying but mostly builds familiarity, and familiarity is not what the exam rewards. If a card's answer surprises you, say it back once after you hear it.

A worked example. On a drive, choose Counseling Skills, due cards first, and an 8-second pause. The voice reads a card such as "Rogers: core conditions". In the pause you say, "congruence, unconditional positive regard and empathy", and then you hear the back of the card and compare. Ten minutes covers a good share of a domain.

What listen mode does not do

It does not change your flashcard schedule. Cards you get right or wrong here are not marked, so finish the session on the flashcards page, where you rate each card and the spacing does its work. Keep the page open while you listen, because most phones stop speaking when the screen locks. If your browser has no text-to-speech, use Safari, Chrome or Edge, or the regular flashcards.
