About

You could trust an app. Or you could trust a counselor educator with fifteen years in the classroom.

I am a licensed professional counselor and an associate professor of Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Colorado Christian University. I have practiced for 19 years and taught counselors for 15. My students call me Dr. W. This site is my answer to a question they ask every semester: how do I get ready for the exam?

Beyond the exam. Dr. Wichterman also publishes videos on counseling, culture and Christianity. Follow on YouTube.

Why a professor

Prep apps know the questions. A professor knows why you miss them.

An app sells you a question bank. It cannot tell you that you keep choosing the assessment answer when the case is asking about treatment planning. It cannot tell you that you read the DSM chapter but skipped the ethics code the exam leans on. I can, because I have watched hundreds of students make the same mistakes and have learned how to correct them.

The NCE and NCMHCE draw on the same core courses I teach: theories, assessment, ethics, diagnosis, treatment planning, group work, career development, research. I am not studying the exam from the outside. I teach the curriculum it is built from.

The material on this site is designed the way I teach and reviewed by me before it goes out. Short explanations. Clear reasons an answer is right and the others are wrong. No recycled items and no hype.

Editorial policy

How the content on this site is written and checked.

Authorship. Lessons, flashcards and practice items are developed under the direction of Dr. Andrew Wichterman, a licensed counselor and counselor educator, and are under his ongoing review. Items are checked against NBCC's current content outline, the DSM-5-TR and the ACA Code of Ethics; if you find an error, use the report link on any item or lesson and it will be corrected.

Sources. Exam facts come from NBCC and CCE publications: the candidate handbooks, content outlines and exam specifications. Licensure facts come from state board rules and the Counseling Compact Commission. Clinical content follows the DSM-5-TR, the ACA Code of Ethics and current practice guidelines. Where a fact changes by state or by year, the post says so and tells you where to confirm it.

Updates. Posts are reviewed when NBCC changes an exam, when a state changes a requirement, and at least once a year. The date on each post is the date it was published or last substantially revised.

Corrections. If you find an error, use the contact page. Corrections are made promptly and noted in the post when they change its meaning.

Independence. Advertising on this site is served by Google and does not influence what is written. Reviews of prep products are the author's opinion. The Licensure Professor is not affiliated with or endorsed by NBCC, and this site is not a substitute for the official candidate handbook or your state board's rules.

The path here

From the clinic, to the classroom, to this site.

01

The clinic

Nineteen years as a licensed professional counselor. Assessment, diagnosis, and treatment with real clients, which is the work the exams are trying to measure.

02

The classroom

Fifteen years as a counselor educator and a PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision. Teaching the core courses, supervising interns, and watching students face the exam every year.

03

This site

Students kept asking for prep they could trust. The Licensure Professor is that prep, designed and reviewed by the person they were already asking.

For faculty and book owners

Counselor educators can use the course, the practice items and the study plan with their students. The faculty page describes what the site offers counseling programs and how it lines up with the current exam.

If you own The NCE Mastery Guide, its free book companion has Practice Exam B, flashcards and extra drills for all 34 chapters. Owners of The 2027 NCE & NCMHCE Update Guide have a free companion page too, with chapter drills, flashcards and checklists.

Beyond exam prep

I continue to see clients and supervise counselors. My practice, testing services, and supervision are described on my clinical site.

Dr. Wichterman's Clinical Work

I also teach ADHD Testing Made Simple, a self-paced course for master's- and doctoral-level clinicians who want to add ADHD evaluations to their practice. Many NCE candidates already see clients under a limited license; if that is you, check your state board's scope-of-practice and supervision rules before you add testing.
