Six lessons on reading and answering the case.
The NCMHCE tests how you work a clinical case: intake, diagnosis, plan, intervention, ethics. Each lesson is a video and a written explanation with a worked case, a practice item explained option by option, key terms and an exam tip. Read a lesson, then work a case in the practice tool. Aligned to the current NCMHCE content outline. Valid for exams through June 30, 2027. Content knowledge (DSM-5-TR, theories, ethics) is covered in the NCE course; this course is about applying it inside a case, and each lesson lists the NCE lessons it draws on. The 12-week plan schedules both. No pass is guaranteed.
From the first line of the intake to the last session
The lessons follow the order of a case. Lesson one is the method; two through six take one domain each and show how its questions are built into the case and what the keyed answer looks like.
Cases in the exam's format
Each case opens with an intake, then a later session, each followed by questions with an explanation after every answer. Work today's short case, a single case, or the full timed exam.
How to work through the six lessons
The lessons follow the order a case unfolds, and lesson one comes first for a reason: it teaches the reading method every later lesson uses. The six are How to read an NCMHCE case; Intake, mental status and risk; Diagnosis in a case; Treatment planning in a case; Counseling skills and interventions, session by session; and Ethics, legal questions and core attributes inside a case. Each takes about twelve minutes to read.
Each lesson has a video overview and a written explanation with a worked case, a practice item explained option by option, key terms, and an exam tip. Read the written lesson even if you watch the video, because the worked case is where the method shows.
What this course assumes
The NCMHCE tests content knowledge you are expected to bring with you: the DSM-5-TR, the major theories, the ethics code. This course does not reteach that material. It shows how to apply it inside a case, and each lesson lists the NCE course lessons it draws on, so you can review the content behind any step that feels shaky.
A worked example. In the diagnosis lesson, a case gives you symptoms, a timeline and what the client denies. The lesson walks through building a short list of possible diagnoses, ruling each one in or out with the details in the intake, and revising when the later session adds new information. That is what a diagnosis question in a case is testing: not naming a disorder from memory, but defending it from the evidence on the page.
After the lessons, practice. Work the daily case and single practice cases, review with the NCMHCE flashcards, and use the 12-week study plan to schedule both. The lessons are free to read; sign in to track which ones you have finished and to download the lesson PDFs.
