Test-day checklist

NCE Test-Day Checklist

The steps from board approval to license paperwork, in the order they come up.

Most test-day problems are administrative, not academic. Work through this list from registration to the paperwork after the exam, and tick off each step as you finish it. Each item links to the post that explains it in full.

How to use this checklist

The list runs in the order things come up: before you register, when you register, while you study, the final week, the night before, exam day, and after the exam. Each phase says when it starts, and each item says what to do, why it matters, and which post on this site explains it in full.

Start by entering your exam date. Each phase then shows a date counted back from it, so you can see which phase you should be working in, and the date is saved as your exam date on your dashboard. If you have not scheduled yet, leave the date empty and work through the first two phases; most of the delays candidates run into happen there, at the state board and in registration, long before anyone opens a book.

Tick an item when it is finished, not when it is planned. Your checkmarks are saved, so you can come back to the page through the weeks and see what is left. The counter at the top shows how many of the steps you have done. Clear checkmarks starts over, and Print gives you a paper copy to keep with your registration emails.

A worked example. Your board approved you this week. Enter the target date you have in mind, then look at the second phase. The first items there are to register under your legal name exactly as it appears on your ID, to know the fee rules before you pay, and to watch for the Authorization to Test. Do each one, tick it, and read the linked post for any step you are unsure about. When the authorization arrives, put the end of your testing window on your calendar and schedule within two days, then come back and set the real exam date so the later phases line up.

Rules, fees, ID requirements and break policies change. This list tells you what to check and when; the current NBCC candidate handbook and your state board's rules are where the specifics live, and they win over anything written here.
